Groups are the foundation of accounting in Tally Prime. Every Ledger Account must belong to a Group. Proper grouping helps Tally prepare Balance Sheet, Profit & Loss Account and other financial reports automatically.

1. What is a Group?

A Group is a collection of similar ledger accounts. It helps organize accounts according to their nature.

Example:
  • Cash belongs to Cash-in-Hand.
  • SBI Bank belongs to Bank Accounts.
  • Salary belongs to Indirect Expenses.
  • Sales belongs to Sales Accounts.

3. Types of Groups

Tally Prime provides two types of Groups.

Tally Prime automatically creates several predefined groups.

5. How to Create a Group
  1. Open Tally Prime.
  2. Go to Create.
  3. Select Group.
  4. Enter Group Name.
  5. Select Under (Parent Group).
  6. Press Ctrl + A to Save.
Example: Create Office Expenses under Indirect Expenses.
6. Important Primary Groups in Tally Prime

Tally Prime comes with predefined Primary Groups. Every ledger must be created under one of these groups.

These groups are already available in Tally Prime. Normally, you do not need to create them again.
7. What is a Sub Group?

A Sub Group is a group created under another Primary Group to organize accounts more efficiently.

8. Altering & Deleting Groups

You can modify or delete user-created groups whenever required.

To Alter a Group
  1. Gateway of Tally
  2. Create / Alter
  3. Select Group.
  4. Modify the required information.
  5. Press Ctrl + A.

To Delete a Group
  1. Open the Group.
  2. Press Alt + D.
  3. Confirm deletion.
A group cannot be deleted if any ledger already exists under it.
