Stroke and Fill in Photoshop

Stroke and Fill are important properties used with shapes in Photoshop. Fill controls the inside area of a shape, while Stroke controls the outline around the shape.

Note: Understanding Fill and Stroke is important for creating buttons, cards, borders, icons, posters, advertisements and other professional designs.

1. What is Fill?

Fill controls the inside area of a shape.

For example, if you create a rectangle and choose blue as its Fill, the inside of the rectangle becomes blue.

┌──────────────────┐
│ BLUE │
│ FILL │
└──────────────────┘

2. What is Stroke?

Stroke controls the outline or border around a shape.

You can change the stroke color, width and appearance according to your design.

┌──────────────────┐
│ │
│ Shape │
│ │
└──────────────────┘

3. Fill and Stroke Together

A shape can have both Fill and Stroke at the same time.

For example, you can create a blue rectangle with a white outline.

│ │
└──────────────────┘

4. Where is Fill Controlled?

When a shape tool is selected, the Fill option can be found in Photoshop's Options Bar.

Fill can also be adjusted through appropriate Properties or shape controls depending on the selected layer.

5. Where is Stroke Controlled?

Stroke controls are available when working with shape layers.

You can select the stroke color and specify its width for the shape.

6. Changing Fill Color

To change the Fill color, select the shape layer and choose a different Fill color.

For example:

Original Fill → Blue

New Fill → Purple

The inside of the shape changes while its basic shape remains the same.

7. Changing Stroke Color

Stroke color can be changed independently from Fill.

For example, a shape can have a white Fill and a black Stroke.

8. Stroke Width

Stroke width determines how thick or thin the outline appears.

Thin Stroke:
──────────────

Medium Stroke:
══════════════

Thick Stroke:
██████████████

Choose the width according to the size and purpose of your design.

9. No Fill

Sometimes a shape needs an outline but no visible inside color.

In this case, the Fill can be set to None.

┌──────────────────┐
│ │
│ No Fill │
│ │
└──────────────────┘

10. No Stroke

A shape can also have a Fill without an outline.

Set the Stroke to None when you want a clean shape without a border.

11. Using Solid Color Fill

A solid color Fill gives a shape one consistent color.

Solid colors are commonly used for buttons, cards, backgrounds and simple graphic elements.

12. Using Gradient Fill

A gradient can create a smooth transition between two or more colors.

Gradient fills are useful for modern backgrounds, buttons and promotional graphics.

Color A ─────────→ Color B

13. Using Pattern Fill

Pattern Fill can create repeated visual patterns inside a shape.

Patterns can be useful for decorative backgrounds and creative graphic designs.

14. Stroke Alignment

Depending on the Photoshop version and shape workflow, stroke alignment options can control how the border is positioned relative to the shape path.

Understanding stroke positioning helps when creating accurate borders and layouts.

15. Stroke Line Types

Stroke can be used with different line appearances depending on the available stroke settings.

  • Solid line
  • Dashed line
  • Dotted line

These options are useful for borders and decorative designs.

16. Fill and Stroke for Buttons

Fill and Stroke are commonly used when creating buttons.

┌────────────────────┐
│ JOIN NOW │
└────────────────────┘

A filled rounded rectangle can be combined with a subtle stroke to create a clean button.

17. Fill and Stroke for Cards

Rectangle shapes can be used as cards with a Fill and Stroke.

A light Fill with a thin Stroke can create a simple professional information card.

18. Fill and Stroke for Logos

Shapes used in logo concepts can use Fill and Stroke to create different visual styles.

Keep the colors simple and make sure the logo remains recognizable at different sizes.

19. Fill and Stroke for Posters

Posters often use shapes with different fills and strokes to separate sections and highlight important information.

  • Offer boxes
  • Information cards
  • Call-to-action buttons
  • Decorative borders

20. Fill and Stroke for Social Media Designs

Social media graphics can use shapes with contrasting Fill and Stroke colors to make important information stand out.

Use consistent colors throughout the design for a professional appearance.

21. Fill and Stroke with Text

Shapes can be placed behind text to create labels, buttons and text boxes.

┌─────────────────────┐
│ ADCA COURSE │
└─────────────────────┘

Keeping text and shape on separate layers makes editing easier.

22. Fill and Stroke with Layer Styles

Fill and Stroke can also work together with Layer Styles.

  • Drop Shadow
  • Inner Shadow
  • Outer Glow
  • Gradient Overlay
  • Color Overlay

Use effects carefully to avoid making the design too complicated.

23. Practical Example: Outline Button

Create a button with no Fill and a colored Stroke.

┌─────────────────────┐
│ ENROLL │
└─────────────────────┘
      ↑
   Stroke only

This style is commonly called an outline button.

24. Practical Example: Filled Button

Create a rounded rectangle with a solid Fill and optional Stroke.

┌─────────────────────┐
│ APPLY NOW │
└─────────────────────┘
       Fill + Stroke

Add a text layer above the shape to complete the button.

25. Choosing the Right Fill and Stroke

The Fill and Stroke should support the purpose of the design.

  • Use high contrast for important buttons.
  • Use subtle borders for information cards.
  • Use brand colors for promotional designs.
  • Avoid too many different border colors.
  • Keep stroke widths consistent.

26. Common Mistakes

  • Using very thick strokes
  • Using too many colors
  • Using poor contrast
  • Adding unnecessary borders
  • Using different stroke widths without purpose
  • Ignoring the overall color scheme
  • Adding too many effects

27. Beginner Practice

Practice Fill and Stroke with different shapes:

  1. Create a new Photoshop document.
  2. Create a rectangle.
  3. Give it a blue Fill.
  4. Add a white Stroke.
  5. Create a circle.
  6. Remove its Fill.
  7. Add a colored Stroke.
  8. Change the Stroke width.
  9. Create a rounded button.
  10. Experiment with different colors.

28. Practical Design Example

Create a simple course advertisement using Fill and Stroke.

┌──────────────────────────────┐
│ SOOPRO PATHSHALA │
│ │
│ ADCA COURSE │
│ │
│ ┌────────────────────┐ │
│ │ JOIN NOW │ │
│ └────────────────────┘ │
│ │
└──────────────────────────────┘

Use a filled rectangle for the main card and a contrasting Stroke for the button.

29. Recommended Workflow

  1. Create the required shape.
  2. Select the shape layer.
  3. Choose an appropriate Fill.
  4. Choose a Stroke if required.
  5. Adjust the Stroke width.
  6. Check the color contrast.
  7. Position the shape correctly.
  8. Add text or other elements.
  9. Review the overall design.
  10. Save the Photoshop project.
