Adverb (क्रिया विशेषण)

An Adverb is a word that modifies or describes a Verb, an Adjective, or another Adverb. It tells us how, when, where, how often, or to what extent something happens.

What is an Adverb?

Adverbs give more information about actions, qualities, and other adverbs.

He runs quickly.
She speaks politely.
The train arrived late.
They worked hard.

Quickly, politely, late, and hard are adverbs because they describe how an action happens.

Why are Adverbs Important?

Adverbs make sentences more meaningful by providing extra details.

What Can an Adverb Describe?

An Adverb can describe:

  • Verb → He runs quickly.
  • Adjective → She is very beautiful.
  • Another Adverb → He runs very quickly.
Quickly modifies the verb "runs".
Very modifies the adjective "beautiful".
Very modifies the adverb "quickly".

Types of Adverbs

There are different types of adverbs. Each type answers a different question.

An Adverb of Manner tells us how an action is performed.

He runs quickly.
She speaks politely.
The teacher explained the lesson clearly.
They worked hard.

These adverbs answer the question "How?"

Adverb of Time

An Adverb of Time tells us when an action happens.

I will come tomorrow.
She arrived yesterday.
He is leaving now.
We met him last week.

These adverbs answer the question "When?"

Adverb of Place

An Adverb of Place tells us where an action happens.

Come here.
Go there.
The children are playing outside.
The bird flew away.

These adverbs answer the question "Where?"

Adverb of Frequency

An Adverb of Frequency tells us how often an action occurs.

I always wake up early.
She often visits her grandparents.
They sometimes play cricket.
He never tells lies.

These adverbs answer the question "How Often?"

Adverb of Degree

An Adverb of Degree tells us the intensity or extent of an action, adjective, or another adverb.

She is very beautiful.
The water is too hot.
He is quite intelligent.
The movie was extremely interesting.

These adverbs answer the question "How Much?"

Formation of Adverbs

Most adverbs are formed by adding ly to adjectives.

Special Adverbs (Exceptions)

Some adverbs do not follow the "ly" rule.

Position of Adverbs

Adverbs can appear in different positions in a sentence.

He speaks clearly. (After Verb)
She always comes on time. (Before Main Verb)
They are usually happy. (After Be Verb)

  • Before main verbs → always comes
  • After am/is/are → is usually
Degrees of Adverbs

Like adjectives, some adverbs also have degrees of comparison.
