English Tenses

Tense shows the time of an action. It tells us whether an action happens in the present, past, or future.

Note: There are 12 tenses in English Grammar. These are divided into Present, Past, and Future Tenses.
What is a Tense?

A tense is a form of a verb that shows the time of an action or event.

I play cricket. (Present)
I played cricket. (Past)
I will play cricket. (Future)

Present Indefinite Tense

Used for habits, routines, universal truths, and daily activities.

Structure:
Subject + V1(s/es)

Example:
✔ I play cricket.
✔ He goes to school.

Present Continuous Tense

Used for actions happening right now.

Structure:
Subject + is/am/are + V1+ing

Example:
✔ I am studying.
✔ They are playing.

Present Perfect Tense

Used for actions that have been completed recently or have a connection with the present.

Structure:
Subject + has/have + V3

Example:
✔ I have completed my homework.
✔ She has written a letter.

Present Perfect Continuous Tense

Used for actions that started in the past and are still continuing.

Structure:
Subject + has/have been + V1+ing + since/for

Example:
✔ I have been studying for two hours.
✔ She has been working since morning.

Past Indefinite Tense

Used for actions completed in the past.

Structure:
Subject + V2

Example:
✔ I played cricket yesterday.
✔ She visited Delhi last week.

Past Continuous Tense

Used for actions that were continuing at a particular time in the past.

Structure:
Subject + was/were + V1+ing

Example:
✔ I was reading a book.
✔ They were playing football.

Past Perfect Tense

Used to show that one action was completed before another action in the past.

Structure:
Subject + had + V3

Example:
✔ I had finished my work before he arrived.
✔ She had left before the meeting started.

Past Perfect Continuous Tense

Used for actions that continued for a period before another action happened in the past.

Structure:
Subject + had been + V1+ing + since/for

Example:
✔ I had been studying for three hours before dinner.
✔ They had been waiting since morning.

Future Indefinite Tense

Used for actions that will happen in the future.

Structure:
Subject + will + V1

Example:
✔ I will play cricket tomorrow.
✔ She will visit Delhi next week.

Future Continuous Tense

Used for actions that will be continuing at a specific time in the future.

Structure:
Subject + will be + V1+ing

Example:
✔ I will be studying at 8 PM.
✔ They will be playing football tomorrow.

Future Perfect Tense

Used for actions that will be completed before a certain future time.

Structure:
Subject + will have + V3

Example:
✔ I will have completed my work by evening.
✔ She will have reached home by 6 PM.

Future Perfect Continuous Tense

Used for actions that will continue up to a certain point in the future.

Structure:
Subject + will have been + V1+ing + since/for

Example:
✔ I will have been studying for three hours by 9 PM.
✔ She will have been working here for five years next month.
