Parts of Speech

Parts of Speech are the basic building blocks of English Grammar. Every word used in a sentence belongs to a particular category called a Part of Speech.

Note: There are eight main Parts of Speech in English Grammar: Noun, Pronoun, Verb, Adjective, Adverb, Preposition, Conjunction and Interjection.
What are Parts of Speech?

Parts of Speech are categories of words based on their function in a sentence.

Example:
Ram plays cricket.

Ram = Noun
plays = Verb
cricket = Noun

Understanding Parts of Speech helps us speak and write correct English.

1. Noun (संज्ञा)

A Noun is the name of a person, place, animal, thing, or idea.

Examples:
Ram
Delhi
Dog
Book
Honesty

Ram is a good boy.

2. Pronoun (सर्वनाम)

A Pronoun is a word used in place of a noun.

Examples:
He
She
It
They
We
Why Pronouns are Used?

Pronouns help avoid repeating the same noun again and again.

Without Pronoun:
Ram is a student. Ram studies daily.

With Pronoun:
Ram is a student. He studies daily.
3. Verb (क्रिया)

A Verb shows an action, state, or occurrence.

Examples:
Run
Eat
Write
Play
Sleep
Sentence Examples

I play cricket.
She writes a letter.
They eat food.

Without a verb, a sentence is incomplete.

4. Adjective (विशेषण)

An Adjective describes or gives more information about a noun or pronoun.

Examples:
Tall
Beautiful
Red
Three
Honest
Sentence Examples

He is a tall boy.
She has a red dress.
I have three books.

Adjectives answer questions like: What kind? Which one? How many?

5. Adverb (क्रिया विशेषण)

An Adverb modifies a Verb, Adjective, or another Adverb. It tells us how, when, where, or how often something happens.

Examples:
Quickly
Slowly
Yesterday
Here
Always

He runs quickly.
She speaks softly.
I always wake up early.

Adverbs answer questions such as: How? When? Where? How often?

6. Preposition (संबंधसूचक अव्यय)

A Preposition shows the relationship between a noun or pronoun and another word in a sentence.

Examples:
In
On
At
Under
Between
Behind

The cat is under the chair.

7. Conjunction (संयोजक)

A Conjunction joins words, phrases, or sentences together.

Examples:
And
But
Or
Because
Although

Ram and Shyam are friends.
I wanted to go, but it was raining.
You can have tea or coffee.

Why Use Conjunctions?

Conjunctions make sentences smoother and help connect ideas clearly.

8. Interjection (विस्मयादिबोधक)

An Interjection is a word used to express sudden feelings or emotions.

Examples:
Wow!
Oh!
Hurrah!
Oops!
Alas!
Sentence Examples

Wow! What a beautiful picture.
Hurrah! We won the match.
Alas! The old man died.

Interjections are often followed by an exclamation mark (!).
