Modal Verbs

Modal Verbs are helping verbs used to express ability, permission, possibility, advice, obligation, necessity, and future actions.

Important: Modal + V1 (Base Form of Verb)
What are Modal Verbs?

Modal Verbs help the main verb express different meanings.

Common Modal Verbs:

can, could, may, might, must,
shall, should, will, would,
ought to, need, dare
✔ I can swim.
✔ You should study.
✔ We must obey rules.
Characteristics of Modal Verbs
  • Always followed by V1.
  • No -s, -es, -ing after modal.
  • Same form for all subjects.
  • No helping verb needed.
  • Used before the main verb.

CAN – Ability & Permission

Can is used to express ability and informal permission.

✔ I can swim.
✔ She can speak English.
✔ Can I come in?
✔ Can you help me?

Meaning:
सकना / अनुमति

COULD – Past Ability & Polite Request

Could is the past form of can and is also used for polite requests.

✔ I could swim when I was young.
✔ Could you help me?
✔ Could I ask a question?

Meaning:
सकता था / विनम्र अनुरोध

MAY & MIGHT – Permission & Possibility

May and Might are used for permission and possibility.

✔ May I come in?
✔ It may rain today.
✔ He might come tomorrow.
✔ We might win the match.

May = Strong Possibility
Might = Weak Possibility

MUST – Obligation & Necessity

Must is used to express strong obligation, duty, necessity, or rules.

✔ You must obey your parents.
✔ Students must wear uniforms.
✔ We must follow traffic rules.
✔ You must complete your homework.

Meaning:
ज़रूर / अवश्य

SHOULD – Advice & Suggestion

Should is used to give advice, suggestions, or recommendations.

✔ You should study regularly.
✔ He should exercise daily.
✔ We should help poor people.
✔ She should speak English daily.

Meaning:
चाहिए

WILL & WOULD

Will is used for future actions, while Would is used for polite requests, wishes, and past habits.

✔ I will visit Delhi tomorrow.
✔ She will call you later.
✔ Would you like some tea?
✔ Would you help me?

Shall is used for suggestions and future plans.

NEED & DARE

Need expresses necessity.

Dare expresses courage.

Rules of Modal Verbs

Modal verbs follow some important grammar rules.

  • Always use V1 after a modal verb.
  • Never use "to" after most modal verbs.
  • Modal verbs do not change with subject.
  • Do not add -s, -es, -ing after modal verbs.
  • Use only one modal verb at a time.
