Past Perfect Continuous Tense

Past Perfect Continuous Tense is used to describe an action that had been continuing for some time before another action happened in the past.

Note: Past Perfect Continuous Tense uses had been + V1+ing
What is Past Perfect Continuous Tense?

This tense shows an action that started in the past, continued for a period of time, and ended before another past action.

✔ I had been studying for two hours before the exam started.
✔ She had been cooking before the guests arrived.
✔ They had been playing cricket before it rained.
Uses of Past Perfect Continuous Tense
  • To show duration before a past action.
  • To emphasize continuous activity in the past.

Affirmative Sentence Structure
Subject + had been + V1+ing + Object

The helping verb had been is used with all subjects.

Negative Sentence Structure

Negative sentences show that an action had not been continuing before another action happened in the past.

Structure:

Subject + had not been + V1+ing + Object
✔ I had not been studying.
✔ He had not been working.
✔ She had not been cooking food.
✔ They had not been playing cricket.

Short Form:
had not = hadn't

Interrogative Sentence Structure

Interrogative sentences are used to ask questions about continuous actions before a past event.

Structure:

Had + Subject + been + V1+ing + Object?

✔ Had she been cooking?
✔ Had they been waiting?

Remember:
Had comes before the subject.
