Past Perfect Tense

Past Perfect Tense is used to describe an action that was completed before another action happened in the past.

Note: Past Perfect Tense uses had + V3 (Past Participle).
What is Past Perfect Tense?

Past Perfect Tense shows that one action was completed before another action in the past.

✔ I had finished my homework before dinner.
✔ She had left before I arrived.
✔ They had completed the project before the deadline.
Uses of Past Perfect Tense
  • To show an earlier past action.
  • To describe completed actions before another past action.

Affirmative Sentence Structure
Subject + had + V3 + Object

The helping verb had is used with all subjects.

had not = hadn't

Interrogative Sentence Structure

Interrogative sentences are used to ask questions about completed past actions.

Structure:

Remember:
Had comes before the subject.

WH Question Sentences

WH Questions begin with What, Why, When, Where, Who, Which, and How.

Use of Before and After

Past Perfect Tense is commonly used with before and after.
