Past Continuous Tense

Past Continuous Tense is used to describe actions that were happening at a particular time in the past.

Note: Past Continuous Tense uses was/were + V1+ing
What is Past Continuous Tense?

Past Continuous Tense shows that an action was in progress at a specific moment in the past.

✔ I was reading a book.
✔ She was cooking food.
✔ They were playing cricket.
Uses of Past Continuous Tense
  • Actions happening at a specific time in the past.
  • Two actions happening simultaneously in the past.
  • Background actions in stories.
  • Interrupted actions in the past.
  • Temporary situations in the past.

Negative Sentence Structure

Negative sentences show that an action was not happening in the past.

Structure:

Subject + was/were + not + V1+ing + Object
✔ I was not sleeping.
✔ He was not playing cricket.
✔ She was not reading a book.
✔ They were not watching TV.

Short Forms:
was not = wasn't
were not = weren't

Interrogative Sentence Structure

Interrogative sentences are used to ask questions about ongoing past actions.

Structure:

Was/Were + Subject + V1+ing + Object?
✔ Was he playing cricket?
✔ Was she cooking food?
✔ Were they studying English?
✔ Were you watching TV?

Remember:
Was/Were comes before the subject.

Remember: Always use V1 + ing after was/were.
