Past Indefinite Tense

Past Indefinite Tense is used to describe actions that happened and finished in the past.

Note: Past Indefinite Tense is also called Simple Past Tense.
What is Past Indefinite Tense?

Past Indefinite Tense describes actions that were completed in the past at a definite time.

✔ I played cricket yesterday.
✔ She visited Delhi last week.
✔ They watched a movie last night.
Uses of Past Indefinite Tense
  • Completed actions in the past.
  • Past habits.
  • Historical events.
  • Actions performed at a specific time.

Affirmative Sentence Structure
Subject + V2 + Object

All subjects use the same verb form (V2).

✔ I played cricket.
✔ He played cricket.

Regular verbs add ed.
Irregular verbs change completely.

Negative Sentence Structure

Negative sentences show that an action did not happen in the past.

Structure:

Subject + did not + V1 + Object
✔ I did not play cricket.
✔ He did not go to school.
✔ She did not cook food.
✔ They did not watch the movie.

Short Form:
did not = didn't

Interrogative Sentence Structure

Interrogative sentences are used to ask questions about past actions.

Structure:

Did + Subject + V1 + Object?
✔ Did you play cricket?
✔ Did he go to school?
✔ Did she write a letter?
✔ Did they watch the match?

Remember:
After Did, always use V1.

WH Question Sentences

WH Questions begin with What, Why, When, Where, Who, Which, and How.

Structure:

WH Word + did + Subject + V1 + Object?
✔ Where did you go yesterday?
✔ Why did he cry?
✔ When did she arrive?
✔ What did they buy?

Students often make mistakes while using Past Indefinite Tense.

I didn't completed my work. I didn't complete my work.

Remember: After Did or Did Not, always use V1.

Past Indefinite vs Present Perfect
Past Indefinite Present Perfect
I finished my work yesterday. I have finished my work.
She went to Delhi last week. She has gone to Delhi.
They completed the project in 2024. They have completed the project.

Past Indefinite mentions a specific past time, while Present Perfect connects the action with the present.
