Present Perfect Continuous Tense

Present Perfect Continuous Tense is used to describe an action that started in the past and is still continuing in the present.

Note: Present Perfect Continuous Tense uses has/have been + V1+ing.
What is Present Perfect Continuous Tense?

This tense describes an action that began in the past and continues up to the present moment.

✔ I have been studying for two hours.
✔ She has been working since morning.
✔ They have been playing cricket since 4 PM.
Uses of Present Perfect Continuous Tense
  • Actions continuing from the past until now.
  • To show duration of an action.
  • To emphasize how long something has been happening.
  • For temporary ongoing activities.
✔ I have been reading this book for a week.
✔ He has been waiting since morning.

Use of Since and For

Since and For are commonly used with Present Perfect Continuous Tense.

Negative Sentence Structure

Negative sentences show that an action has not been continuing.

Structure:

Subject + has/have + not + been + V1+ing + Object
✔ I have not been studying.
✔ We have not been working.
✔ He has not been playing cricket.
✔ She has not been cooking food.

Short Forms:
have not = haven't
has not = hasn't

Interrogative Sentence Structure

Interrogative sentences are used to ask questions.

Structure:

Has/Have + Subject + been + V1+ing + Object?

✔ Have they been working?
✔ Has he been playing cricket?
✔ Has she been reading a book?

The helping verb comes before the subject.

WH Question Sentences

WH Questions begin with What, Why, When, Where, Who, Which, and How.
