Present Continuous Tense

Present Continuous Tense is used to describe actions that are happening right now, at the moment of speaking, or around the present time.

Note: Present Continuous Tense is also called Present Progressive Tense.
What is Present Continuous Tense?

This tense describes actions that are going on now or are in progress.

✔ I am studying now.
✔ She is cooking food.
✔ They are playing cricket.
Uses of Present Continuous Tense
  • Actions happening now.
  • Temporary situations.
  • Actions happening around the current time.
  • Future planned actions.
  • Changing situations.
✔ I am reading a book now.
✔ We are staying in Delhi this week.
✔ She is meeting her teacher tomorrow.
Affirmative Sentence Structure

Structure:

Subject + is/am/are + V1+ing + Object

Rules:

  • Add ing → play → playing
  • Remove final e → write → writing
  • Double last consonant → run → running
Negative Sentence Structure

Negative sentences are used to show that an action is not happening right now.

Structure:

Subject + is/am/are + not + V1+ing + Object
✔ I am not sleeping.
✔ He is not playing cricket.
✔ She is not cooking food.
✔ They are not watching TV.

Short Forms:
is not = isn't
are not = aren't

Interrogative Sentence Structure

Interrogative sentences are used to ask questions.

Structure:

Is/Am/Are + Subject + V1+ing + Object?
✔ Am I writing a letter?
✔ Is he playing cricket?
✔ Is she reading a book?
✔ Are they studying English?

The helping verb comes before the subject.

WH Question Sentences

WH Questions begin with What, Why, When, Where, Who, Which, and How.

Structure:

WH Word + is/am/are + Subject + V1+ing + Object?
✔ What are you doing?
✔ Why is he crying?
✔ Where are they going?
✔ When is she coming?

Signal Words of Present Continuous

These words often indicate Present Continuous Tense.

Present Indefinite shows habit, while Present Continuous shows action happening now.
